I grew up with the wonder of cartoons and comics. It was always interesting how we readily perceived three dimensional objects from the black and white markings. An artist’s pencil, pen, and brushwork allowed us to visualize characters and backdrops as actual things, and not just simple blotches and lines on paper. I followed in the footsteps of these heroes in college, becoming a cartoonist for the university’s paper. But that was not enough.

I like to take moments from life and transform them into black and white. This starts with the presence of emotions or lasting impressions in a photograph. Using multiple technologies, I manipulate the photograph to strip it of superfluous color, and try to boil it down to the two simplest colors and a single intention. At that point, I move away from technology and paint what is left - the essence of the original moment.
